this essay is a narrative study of the novel “beggar” (al shahaz) by naguib mahfouz (the renowned egyptian writer). a noticeable part of this research has been allocated to the narrative style of the novel in which discussions such as point of view, focalization, speech-expression method and thoughts have been examined. in this article, in addition to narration, discussions like title, opening, description, simile, semiotics of characters’ names and place too have been analyzed from semiotic perspective. the primary outcome achieved from this composition is that the novel beggar, having a semi-complicated plus polyphonic narration, along with using techniques such as mise en abyme or poetics of narration, is the is archetype of naguib mahfouz’s third-phase literary course which is known as the philosophic realism or semi-psychological stage.
